The land hosting Tūrama Retreat carries the name Whatitiripataihi, a reference to the sudden thunder claps associated with the foothills of the nearby mountain, Ngongotaha. It is also a subtle reference to weaving together two strands of whakapapa – the land to sky, male with female, elder with grandchild – to generate new growth. The land is famous for its gardens, carrying good pumice soil, drainage and no lack of streams and springs. Hine-i-turama’s ancestors have gardened on this land for many generations.
